I'm telling all of you that B-Man may need to be getting his blood pressure checked on a regular basis nowadays. Where's the down weeks? Where's the comic relief of an Indianapolis Panties that was so nice in year's past? Where are the managers napping week to week? They sure ain't in Hardball Heaven! That's for sure! Just when you think the league can't go any higher in expertise, it still continues. Look at all the waiver wire pick-ups and I'm talking DAILY!! I can't remember a time when there was so much activity.
Besides the baseball enthusiasts we all are in this league, I blame Yahoo! Gone are the days when a manager had to rely on their own knowledge of the game by scowering the box scores and watching ESPN highlights late at night to try and get an edge. Now there is article after article on Yahoo and other search engines that keep us informed 24/7. I mean "Closing Thoughts" practically spells out who to pick up as a closer. Except it is still difficult for the Nats, whose pen just sucks radically. If you are having trouble at 2nd base just find out who's hot by skimming one of 50 articles out there. I mean it is ridiculous with all the information at our fingertips. I don't think anyone really has to watch a game anymore to be a successful manager at this fantasy thing. Maybe I am a traditionalist, but I want my daily newspaper, local coverage of my favorite team on the local late night news, and if you are really fortunate, a half an hour of ESPN Sportscenter with Chris Berman. Now those were the days. Oh wait, I forgot, MLB's Game of the Week on NBC on Saturdays with "This Week in Baseball" a prelude to that.
But, I will take whatever changes have come about over time, if it means the level of competition in Hardball Heaven is this intense. It has been so unnerving at times with practically some category coming down to Sunday night's final game that I was happy to see that I wouldn't be watching Stattracker this past Sunday, even if it meant a 1 point loss to Randy. I love baseball as it is my passion, but just like Major Leaguers needs a day or two off from time to time, so do fantasy enthusiasts. Randy and I both concurred that we were witnessing a "small miracle" happen on Mother's Day!
So, Dear Lord, I pray for another "tiny miracle" to befall some matchup this week, so they to can share what Randy and I had........a much needed day off!! Here's to the competition everyone, but also take time to smell the roses!
BASEMAN
Sorry as this was not a true "Week in Review" but have been awfully busy and have not had the time I need to pour over the stats. I hope to do a better job of that after Week 6 concludes. Hopefully this week you enjoyed this piece as filler.
