Podcast #3 Baseman and Hardballer Draft

Mark Porcher (Baseman) & Randy Stovall (Hardballers)

Draft Preparation Steps

Pre-Draft Thoughts

Round by Round Draft Thoughts

On a scale of 1-10 I would rate this probably a 6 on quality as there was some distortion on Mark's end that was not there in earlier test runs. I will get this corrected on future Podcasts.

Also there was a little bit of "drop out" on Mark's end a couple of times. Not really sure why. Maybe it was the call recorder but hey...... it was free so what do you expect.

Approximate run time 36min 20 sec
16.6mb :)

Hope everyone enjoys and look forward to including everyone in a future podcast when I get all the kinks worked out.

2011 Draft Prognosis

Ok, now that the fun has started, who is going to be basking in the sunshine and who may be ducking for cover in the summer thunderstorms. I will be looking at strengths and weaknesses of each team based on drafting position only, not final outcomes.

Hardballers: Getting Pujols at the top always helps a club, but Randy still had to draft well after a fairly easy decision. The team is balanced and has a quality infield. Like most of Randy's teams, this one will hit for average, get hits, and score runs. Decent in SB's. Starting pitching will get good number of K's with Scherzer, Jimenez, and Gonzalez. Weaknesses: Not a lot of glaring weak points for this club, but the team could use some more power. Had better hope Quentin stays healthy for majority of time. The back end of the starting rotation at pitchers 4 and 5 are suspect. I see some streaming in the future. Right now despite 4 relievers, only 2 can get saves. Should get a third.
Prognosis: Watch out for this team. Could be Randy's year to win it all!

Wooster Panties: Strengths are Hanley R., Kinsler, Holliday and Werth. Right behind are Carlos Santana and David Ortiz. Standout pitching in Sabathia and Carpenter. Good ERA on the pitching staff. Overall, this club is pretty average. You look at the numbers from last year and there is not much to jump up and get excited about, but yet there are some proven vets on this team. The big question is can the vets stay healthy? If so, then good things can happen. Speed is not there as a glaring weak spot, but most of everything is just middling stats for the most part.
Prognosis: Have I already mentioned "Average?"

Sultan of Swat: Sorry Chad, but am giving you a pass since you had the unfortunate mishap during the draft. Not fair to look at your club since you didn't draft yourself.

BASEMAN: Strengths are balance on offense with speed and power. Starters from 1-5 are solid as one looks at the ERA. Weaknesses: Need some bounce back years from Teixeira and Victorino with batting averages, Markakis to develop more power, and Wieters to live up to the hype. Relief pitching has 3 closers and one potential, but not household names. Who will be B-Man's D-Backs relievers this year?
Prognosis: BASEMAN will always be a thorn in the side. Teams always find a way.

Zonk: A definite strength is relief pitching and that is where I start. HMMMMM! Also like the starting staff's ERA led by Lincecum and Bucholz. Offensive stars are Votto, V-Mart, Ichiro, and Nelson Cruz. Weaknesses: Can this club stay healthy? Talk about some risks with Roberts, Aramis Ramirez, Beltran, and Sizemore. I would have loved this club 2-3 years ago, when these players could actually get out of bed in the morning.
Prognosis: This club would worry me throughout the season wondering when the next player is going to break down. Not a way to go for 6 months.

Stars: Strengths are again fielding an excellent offensive club. There is balance all the way around. Sandoval should have bounce back year, which makes the offense even more scary. Top 3 starters on the staff (Johnson, Greinke, and Hanson). How did Stars get all 3 of these guys? Weaknesses: No pop for Gardner and Andrus. I am reaching here everyone. Back end of rotation is shaky.
Prognosis: What do you expect? Another contending team for the title and a favorite with this club.

Uticans: Can you say Uticans and Starting pitching staff as a strength in the same sentence? Has one of the top staffs in the league with Hamels, Liriano, Haren, and Sanchez. Lots of K's! But, lots of BB's too. Even the pen is solid with Papelbon, Frankie Rodriguez, and Thornton. Lots of hits and batting average on offense with Mauer, a now healthy Morneau, Cargo, and Pence leading the way. Oh yeah, Jose Reyes may have a big year too for a contract year. Weaknesses: This team could use a little more power in HR and RBI dept. Chris Johnson and Aaron Hill are questions marks. Also, why 3 Astros drafted on offense? Someone has to hit for them. Better be those 3 players.
Prognosis: Much improved team from last year. I think Kerm will be pleased with his pitching staff for once. This team can be sneaky good this year.

Ageless One: What stands out to me is power up and down the lineup, which is unlike teams of old for Mike. Very surprised to see this kind of makeup on his team. Weaver and Oswalt are a good 1-2 punch on the frontline of the rotation. Needs Weeks, Huff, and Hart to produce like they did last year and that will make this team real tough. Weaknesses: Need McClouth and B.J. Upton to pick it up! If Weeks goes down, Huff comes back to earth, and Hart slumps, then could be a long season. Question marks abound on this club. Fernando Rodney as closer. This is the best the Halos have in the 9th??? Give me a break! This guy is liable to walk 3 straight batters with no outs and get out of the inning though to save a game, so who knows? Just hard to live with him.
Prognosis: Very hard team to figure out. There are so many possibilities. So, I will go middle of the pack.

Fear the Beard: Love the outfield and speed on this team. Heyward, McCutcheon, and Crawford is a deadly combination for the aforementioned speed and runs. Like Ageless this isn't a team reminiscent of Timmy's past ones. Also, tons of starting pitching depth. Weaknesses: The opposite of speed is obviously power, which is what this team lacks. Also, on offense, there is no depth whatsoever. Morales is out for some time at the start of the year.
Prognosis: For this team to be taken seriously there has to be some balance. I think Timmy will straighten that out in time.

Tennessee Hitters: Tommy absolutely loaded up on offense as it is kind of scary and may be Tommy's best team yet! Getting Braun and Adrian Gonzalez in the first two rounds really isn't fair. Plus with Prado at second and Beltre at third, then the potential for weekly fireworks is likely. Beltre will hit in Texas even if this isn't a contract year. Speed in Rajai Davis, Jimmy Rollins, and Angel Pagan, what is not to like? Stanton can also bust out the power stick anytime too. Weaknesses: Pitching is decent, but not a weekly threat. Let's just say better hope to beat Tommy here because most weeks the offense will go to him in points. Needs more relief.
Prognosis: Hitters continues his assault on trying to get a league title!

Champions: Well, how does our league winner look this year? There is definitely some thump on the squad this year unlike last. Homeruns and RBI's are plentiful. And of course, Champs has thrown a little speed into the mix as well. The pitching staff is led of course by Halladay and Lee. Do they play for the Phillies? Who is going to beat Champs weekly in BB's? Usually teams do not have a decided advantage here, but outside of Jaime Garcia at 64 BB's, the next highest is 37 by Carl Pavano who pitched 221 innings. Not fair Ed, not fair. Solid relief pitching. Weaknesses: Despite the power on offense, there is not much in the way of runs and hits. I do think the offense is better than last year however. But, I also think the pitching is not as strong even with Halladay and Lee. Some soft tossers, who won't help much in strikeouts, so here is where to get a point.

Prognosis: Champs really won with pitching last year and the hitting got hot at the end of the year. Had arguably the best pitching of all-time (I would challenge that with my squad of Greinke, Lincecum, and Jimenez however). If Utley comes back, which is a big "IF", then this team can contend in the upper half. Without Utley, a repeat performance of last season is highly unlikely. Sorry Ed, nothing personal after losing to you in the title, but callling em' as I see em.'

Caz Creek: I really want to write Squirrels, but will abide by your new name, although Squirrels is the preferred choice. Picking 12th can be tricky, but Juan got Wright and Hamilton with those picks. Let's start there as strengths. Posey, Rasmus, and Stubbs have huge upside. Look for improved years from them. Very strong relief in Feliz and Bell! Two of the best! Combination of Verlander and Lester are two of the best on the frontline. Weaknesses: Question marks at 1B, SS, and bench? Even though there are solid players with upside, there is still not enough proven experience on the club overall. Lots of young players with still talent to prove. For instance, I like Gaby Sanchez, but not as a starting 1B. Nishioka or Brignac at short? Is it Matusz, Romero, or Hudson's time yet?
Prognosis: Better have young guns play over their heads. Just too many players not ready to produce as top fantasy players yet. Hope you enjoyed the 2011

Prognosis from BASEMAN!

Hardballers 2011 Draft

Albert Pujols
I absolutely loathe having the 1st pick of the draft. I don't care what the league stats say concerning success of teams that draft first is. I don't like it. With the whole baseball universe at your disposal it really feels like there are less logical options at pick 1 than any other pick in the draft.

I know I said "damnit" at least 19 times between my first pick and my second as I watched player after player disappear. I actually felt like I was playing catchup the whole rest of the way through the draft.

The Hardballer philosophy is to have balance. No need to "own" any one category but rather to be competitive across. the board. I actually refer back to previous seasons "Recipe for Success" posts to remind myself just what kind of numbers are needed on a weekly basis to be in the thick of things. I think I have accomplished that with this draft although I am relying on some improved performances from some players. (Zobrist comes to mind.)

Here is my round by round picks and the rationale (or lack thereof) behind them. Feel free to criticize all  you want. Just keep it to yourself :)

Round 1 Pick 1            A. Pujols

The worst part about picking early in the draft (1-3) is not who you will get but realizing who you know you won’t be getting by the time your 2nd pick comes around. It took everything I had not to pick H. Ramirez knowing how lean the SS position is. I ultimately decided there was a reason Pujols is the consensus #1 pick. Namely HR’s which are just as hard to come by these days as good shortstops.

Round 2 Pick 24          K Youkilis

Position scarcity at the top levels seemed to me to be greatest at 2B, 3B, SS, and LF. Since I had spent round 1 on a relatively deep position, I was hoping that I could spend the next 2 picks filling 2 of those positions with quality players. I was literally crossing my fingers that Youkilis would make it to me. I know I will have to do something to carry me through the 1st week till his 3B eligibility becomes official but I would rather do that than to have to pass on the position till later in the draft.

Round 3 Pick 25          D Pedroria

With Utley’s condition up in the air the 2nd tier of 2B seemed thinner than ever. Even coming off an injury I felt Pedroria was a safe pick and would give me a quality 2B in another lean position. I pretty much decided that I would live with someone like an E Andrus at SS if necessary and went ahead and filled the 2B position.

Round 4 Pick  48         U Jimenez

I really was not going to look at SP until maybe round 6 but with 7 pitchers already off the board I bit and picked Jimenez. I was trying to determine at this point if I wanted to take Jeter at SS since he was still there. Decided to take a top pitcher instead and bought myself 90 more seconds to think about Jeter. (Here is where the Pujols pick sucks. I could be looking at Morneau in this round with the SS position already secured).

Round 5 Pick 49          D Jeter

If the last month of preparation taught me anything it was that the SS position sucked after Jeter. Assuming he has 1 more decent season in him then I gotta take him here or forget about SS altogether for a couple of rounds. Couldn’t talk myself out of it.

Round 6 Pick 72          A Rios

Actually LF was all I was thinking about right here. All the top guys were gone and there were only a couple left that I liked. I have drafted no one in the outfield so it is now or never if I want any real quality. I picked Rios here because it looks better but my next pick was already determined before I decided on Rios

Round 7 Pick 73          D Young

If you are looking for a LF after this I hate it for ya. This is a reach according to ADP but good average, decent power with some upside in a lean position has a real calming effect right now.

Round 8 Pick 96          B Zobrist

I like the upside potential of Zobrist. I like his 2009 season. I like his multi-position eligibility. I like that he technically fills my last OF position although I will try and revisit RF later.

Round 9 Pick 97          M Scherzer

I feel more comfortable looking at SP now. Hoping Scherzer stays healthy and displays the top 10 SP skills he has.

Round 10 Pick 120      G Gonzalez

SP went way too early in my opinion but you have to adapt to the herd so I grabbed another good pitcher with good upside. Love the K’s… sorta overlooked  the BB’s though. This might be one that comes back to bite me.

Round 11 Pick 121      J Broxton

With a boatload of RP already off the board (what is it with you guys?) I felt I needed to grab one now or I would wind up punting the category. Broxton scares the hell out of me so I am thinking right now I want Kuo. Please, please, please let him still be there a few rounds from now.

Round 12 Pick 144      C Kimbrel

This ain’t an ideal situation I am finding myself in as far as closers go. Way too early to be this low on good closers. The situation in Atl is sorta undecided between Kimbrel and Venters so I now have ANOTHER RP I have to hope I get. I now want Venters too. Questions is who 1st Venters or Kuo?

Round 13 Pick 145      C Quentin

I need more power on my team so I am grabbing the oft injured Quentin to play RF. Now Zobrist is officially a super-sub.

Round 14 Pick 168      J Posada

I was really hoping to get Napoli as my C but he went too early. Posada will be doing a lot of DH this year so should get plenty of AB’s. Will hurt my team less than any of the other catchers remaining. All postions filled now!

Round 15 Pick 169      J Helickson

I planned pre-draft to build my pitching staff of mostly mid-level pitchers of which there were plenty. Helickson is getting a lot of positive press and has a ton of upside. Moving on.

Round 16 Pick 192      H-C Kuo

Its time. Whew!

Round 17 Pick 193      J Venters

Mission Accomplisehd!!

Round 18 Pick 216      J Shields

Has had some rough seasons but is solid on K’s. Will look at him for a few weeks of the season to see if things are ready to turn around for  him.

Round 19 Pick 217     C Jones

Bet you thought I had forgot about that 3B situation didn’t ya! I am 100% convinced Jones can stay healthy for 1 week till Youk gets his eligibility.

Round 20 Pick 240      W Venable

Leadoff for SD. LF, CF, RF eligibility. Speed, maybe 20 HR potential if he gets his AVG up. My sleeper pick for the year. (If this one don’t work out I got another one in mind ;) )

Round 21 Pick 241      I Kennedy

Opening day starter for Ari. After that who knows.

So there ya have it. After weeks of reading experts analysis, listening to podcasts and analyzing spreadsheets I look at this team and say.... "All that for this?"

Actually I feel pretty good about this teams odds of accomplishing my #1 goal for the regular season which is to make the top tier playoffs. After that anything can happen. The marathon now begins. I know that some of these players, and maybe several, will not be on my roster at seasons end. But for right now... for week 1.... I can live with this group.

I hope others of you will take the time to make a similar post to describe how draft day felt at your club house.

Here's to a good season!

New Bell!!!! The Hardball Heaven Podcast!

....
Ok guys. I have been experimenting again and I am going to go ahead and make a test run on this newest bell (or maybe a whistle) for our league.

I have been listening to gazillions of podcasts lately on iTunes and while some are very professional, many are extremely amateurish. So I got to thinking that maybe it would be neat to have a Hardball Heaven podcast. I have spent the better part of 2 days researching how to make a podcast... where to set it up at... and all that jazz and after several trials and several errors I finally came up with something that is semi-amateurish to put on display. You should be able to click on the play button on the gadget below and it start playing. Depending on your internet speed (mine is actually not that fast although it is dsl) you may have to pause it after it starts and let it buffer up a few minutes in order to get a non-interrupted playback. I am sure all of you have watched youtube videos and the same hoops you have to jump through to watch them should apply here as well.

After you listen to it PLEASE give some feedback and tell me what you think. I know I am no talk show host and once you get past snickering at my delivery maybe you can opine on the concept and if you think this is something that you would enjoy.

If you like it I hope you will give some ideas on how best to use this tool as well as consider making your own episodes to post.

Anyway... I am pumped and ready for some feedback so let 'er rip!

Hardballers

ps: the last couple of words got cut out for some reason. No biggie but just wanted you to know that the end was in fact  the end. I will see if I can figure out how that happened.

My MVP !

My 1st round draft pick!

Couldn't think of any catchy stats to post this week but I am still working on a couple. Instead I will write about what is on my mind. Namely Raissa!

Spent a miserable day today in Owensboro, Ky as Berea traveled to Owensboro to play Brescia. (No guys this ain't Div 1 but this is college and who cares?) It was supposed to be 48 and sunny at game time but instead it was more like 36 and there was nothing that remotely resembled sunshine at all. In spite of the crappy conditions I was ecstatic to get to see Raissa play. Berea is 3 hours away and since O'boro is only 1 1/2 hrs away I couldn't miss this opportunity. Just to get the preliminaries out of the way, Berea swept the double header winning the 1st game 4-0 and the 2nd game 9-4!

Raissa had a pretty productive day playing LF and batting 6th. She had 2 chances in the field and easily made both catches. Depending on how the official scoring goes she was probably 4-9 at the plate and maybe 5-9 if they show her a little love on a booted slap to 3rd base. She slapped, she bunted and even doubled to left center. She drove in 1 run on the day but did not score.

Did I mention it was freezing? Couldn't tell it by looking at Raissa on the field. She took the field with nothing more than underarmour  on under her uniform. My Mom went with me and we watched a lot of the game from the car in the outfield. (Actually pretty good seats... lol) As we were trying to locate Raissa during pre-game warmups, I saw her and told Mom..... "There she is being her Billy Bad Ass Self with no jacket or earmuffs or anything on".  Raissa just loves the game of softball. That smile on her face is contagious on the team and only disappears when she steps to the plate or readies herself in the field. It was pretty obvious that she has become one of the team even though she is 1of 2 freshmen on the team.

I have always warned myself to not become one of those types of parents that try to relive their childhood vicariously through their children. I dearly love watching Raissa play ball and of course want her to do good. But I can honestly say that it is HER happiness playing the sport that motivates me most. I remember when she was just a tot learning to play. Her 1st season she was "stuck" in the outfield and batted near the bottom of the order after all the coaches kids. But she worked and worked to improve her game. She always has enjoyed practice time just as much as the game itself. Toward the end of that 1st season her progress was not lost on her coaches and they moved her up in the lineup as high as they could without of course costing their own children any at bats. Her 2nd year was a different team, different coach and new spot in the batting order. Lead Off!!. She was invited to try out for a traveling team that year but I actually discouraged her from doing it because I wondered if her game was really good enough. After her 3rd season of league ball she was invited to join the traveling team "without" a try out. From there I guess you could say the rest is history. Today she plays all outfield positions and can stand in for 1B and Catcher if needed.

She has provided me with more proud Dad moments than I can possibly cover in this post. She has had game winning hits, game saving plays, All-Star recognition, awards, trophies and the list goes on. Of course, to be fair, I have agonized with her on more than 1 occasion when she struck out with bases loaded at a crucial point in a game. But Raissa always dealt with it, learned from it and moved on. She refused to let things destroy her. I told her once in all sincerity that she had more "15 minutes of fame" in 1 season than I had my whole baseball career.

She plays the game because she loves it. What a concept. She chose Berea because she felt it was the right school for her and she loves it. I told her early on as we were looking at colleges that she should not choose a college just because of softball. I told her that although we may not know what she WILL be when she finishes college, one thing we know she WON'T be is a professional softball player. As one coach at one college was calling me weekly, sweetening the pot and trying to get me to encourage Raissa to go to his school, she eventually reminded ME.... "It's not all about softball Dad".

Watching her play today, even though it is early in the season and the conditions were horrendous, it occurred to me just how right she was. She was doing something she truly loves, at a place she thoroughly enjoys.Wonder why Pujols can't see it that way?
